When beauty goes out of our lives, even the most virtuous and honest man turns into a beast. Here, beauty is not being referred to in literal terms. Beauty means things like happiness, satisfaction and hope. Likewise, beast does not signify a fierce monster. On the contrary, it refers to misery, failure and hopelessness. When man loses his love, he loses his will to live. He turns into something else altogether and the transformation is sudden and shocking.

Amanush, a film that was made several decades go, has a song titled Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda… this song perfectly captures the sentiments of a man thus injured and speaks of his frustration. This is one of the most expressive songs in the history of Indian cinema.

The song is picturized on the main leads of the film- Sharmila Tagore and Uttam Kumar. The movie itself deserves special mention, considering the wonderful performances given by all involved in its creation. This song takes place right after the hero feels that the love of his life has cheated him, lied to him and thus ruined him. They are both on a ferry and this is where he gives vent to his feelings.

The lyrics for this song were written by Indivar and hats off to him – he did an amazing job. His words become the words of the wounded hero and make you forget that this is just a film. They are so strong that you feel you are on that ferry and can feel the hero’s pain and share his misery. He sings about someone who broke his heart and set him in the path of self destruction. He then says that though he has the whole sea around him, he still thirsts for a drop of water and this thirst is so intense, that it will drown his whole life. The words are so hard hitting that they make you wince. The metaphor of life being the sea and love being the thirst is not lost. The hero sings about how life itself has closed its doors on his face and all that is left in his life is cold betrayal. All this has turned him into an inhuman beast.

The words are supported with Shymal Mitra’s music- giving them more value and depth than they had before. It creates a feeling of loneliness and singularity that tears at your heart.

Special mention must be made about Sharmila Tagore. Though she does not have a part in this song, she is not overshadowed by Uttam Kumar’s exemplary performance. Her silence speaks volumes about her character and her suffering is evident for all to see. A wonderful, superlative performance by the lead pair.

The sequence too has its own significance. The song starts in the day and ends near nightfall- signifies that the hero feels his life too is near over. Beautiful cinematography that compliments the song.

All in all, a raw, all consuming song that speaks about something which all humans endure and touches a cord somewhere within all of us.
