For
Guru’s birthday, let me cover something, which we have never discussed
before in length, at least during my two year plus continuous stay in the
forum.
I made a random pick and came up with this song, music of which was composed
by Amit Kumar. I think it was Guru himself who was in the act and used the
name of his son just for promotion sake.
Ore Hooooooo
Naam amaar...
Naam amaar Kishore Kumar Ganguly
Robi Thakur jey bhasha te
Bolto katha tai boli
Robi Thakur jey bhasha te
Bolto katha tai boli
Naam amaar Kishore Kumar Ganguly
Ohe Banerjee noi Chatterjee noi Mukhejee noi
Ganguly. . . .
Naam amaar Kishore Kumar Ganguly
Here, Guru speaks about himself - Kishore Kumar Ganguly, a lad speaking in
the same language as Rabindranath Tagore did. He shows how proud he was with
his surname which is different from the others in his region - Banerjee,
Chatterjee and Mukherjee and others.
Aaha galpo holeo shotti katha bolchhi shobai shono
Roop kahini Roop katha noi ajgubi noi kono
Amar gaaner bondhu ra shob mon diye aaj shono
O Bhai mon diye aaj shono
Ak je chhilo dushtu chhele
Bejaye rokhom kaalo
Kebol lekha poraye ashtarambha
Mon ta chhilo bhalo
O taar mon ta chhilo bhalo
Emni te shey chalaak chatur motey shey noi boka
Aador kore dakto shobai gaayiea babu khoka
He then takes us down his memory lane. He narrates us, the friends of his
music through his life. The story, which is real and not enrobed in fantasy.
Once upon a time there lives a naughty dark boy who was pathetic in studies
but had a heart of gold. He was clever and had an excellent voice for which
people used to call him Singer Boy.
Khandwa baashi Bombay bajar
Shei chhele tar baari
Taadir dokan gaanja godam
Shaamne chhilo taari
Paaliye jeto khelar maathey
Jethaye shaara bela
Bondhu ra shob jut to eshe
Khelto nana khela
He used to stay in Khandwa in a locality called Bombay Bazaar and his house
was facing a country liquor shop where drugs were also sold. The boy used to
run away to the playground where he used to play different games with his
friends.
Koyen to shei pola ta keda ?
O ta ami go ami..
Ohe Banerjee noi Chatterjee noi Mukhejee noi
Gangerjee. . . .
Naam amaar Kishore Kumar Ganguly
Guru then asks us ‘do we know who that boy was ?’
Oh yes we do indeed Guru, that is why we are all here to discuss about you.
Ami Bombay baashi aaj probashi
Tobu khaanti bangaali
Naam amaar Kishore Kumar Ganguly
Haaa
He used to stay in Mumbai but still he maintained the ethics and values of a
Bengali family.
Now comes a military marching type of music and the song goes :
HALT !
Amar baba chhilen raashbhari lok
BA BL Kunjalal
Utle rege jeten khepe
Mukhta je taar hoto laal
Baba chhilen peshaye ukil
Neshaye je taar chhilo gaan

Dadamonir gaan shuniye petam ekti taka

Shokti chhilo Saigal saheber gaane paanchti taka
Guru says that his dad Kunjlal was a very dignified person and was a lawyer
by profession. He used to turn red when he got angry and his obsession was
music. He used to have a gathering of his fellow lawyers and many a times,
his sleeping son was called up for a song and the request was Ashok Kumar –
Devika Rani song : Main Ban ke chiriya ban ke ban ban and many others. He
used to get lots of accolades and cash for his songs. His rate was Re. 1 for
an Ashok Kumar song, Rs. 2.50 for a Bhatiyali song of S. D. Burman and the
tough K. L. Saigal songs at Rs. 5 each.
Shobar jini Ashok Kumar
Amar Dadamoni
Taar kachhey te haathe kodi
Amar parashmoni
Amar didimonir gola
Mishti chholi bhaari
Didi amar gaaner guru
Shishyo ami taari
Guru says that Ashok Kumar to all was Dadmoni (elder brother said in a find
way in Bengali)to him who started his music training. His sister had a very
sweet voice and she is regarded as the Guru of his singing.
Amni kore ronge roshey
Bhorechhilo din guli
Chhoto belar Kishore ekhon
KISHORE KUMAR
Haariyechhey Ganguly
Bujhlen na ? Bojachhi !!!!!!
Thus the days passed by, filled with colours and happiness. Now the young
Kishore has become Kishore Kumar and lost its Ganguly.
Ami gayak holam
Khub naam holo
Ami obhineta holam
Aaro naam holo
Arre Kayar
Nikalta kyon nahi bahar
Tu jaakar us aurat ki
Jo tere joote kholne mein apni swarg samajhti hai
Magar tu to
Us aurat ki puja kar raha hai
Jiske joote tujhe kholne padhte hai
Then he goes on a fast forward mode, he became a singer and got fame, he
became an actor and got more fame. A voice once rang out that you coward,
why are you hiding ? You are going to that woman who would make you open her
shoes instead of she opening your shoes.
Well, he does not describe in details but probably I think that it was what
his father told him when he was about to marry Madhubala.
Hothat ! Hothat !
Amar jeeboner akashey uthlo jhaawd
Jhawd noi jhawd noi kaor
Aaye kaor
Aaye Kaor amake korle
Deshantor
Shongshare shong sheje thaka
Laglo na pochhondo
Abosheshey hoye gelam
Swami Kishoreanando
Jai Govindam jai Gopalan
Jai Govindam jai Gopalan
Peechey padh gaya Income taxam
Peechey padh gaya Income taxam
Pant ! pant !
Then he recollects the moments of his life when came a storm in the form of
Income tax. He adds a dash of humour to it as one can find out.
Tar por onek kichhui ghotlo
Kichhu pelam kuchhu dilam
Kichhu haralam
Sriti naamer rail gadi ta
Peechon dikey chhote
Amar moner porda te shob
Chhobi hoye othey
Besh tochhilam chhote belaye
Mayer aanchol tole
Shei kotha ti bhebe ekhon
Bhaashi chokher jole
Shishu ghumolo para jurolo
Borgi elo deshe
Gaaner shure ghum parato
Ma je bhalo beshe
Ghum parani chhoraye ekhon
Khokhon ghumoye na
Tarar deshe hariye gechhey
Sneho moyi ma
This is where Guru goes into nostalgia. He says that after that, many things
happened in his life, he got a few and lost a few. Nostalgia is described
here as a train which runs backwards. He feels that he was far better off
when he was a child under his mother and that fills his eyes with tears now.
He recollects the lullabye his mother used to sing for him, his loving
mother who has been lost amongst the stars in the sky.
In the last stanza, one could feel the pathos Guru has in his life and how
he missed his mother during his bad days. The way Guru delivered it brings a
tear to every eye and a lump in every throat.
This is the only song where he has described his life, both the light side
as well as the sad side. It’s a delight to the listener. The way he starts
the song in a jolly mood and ends it in such immense pain is noteworthy.
Even after the song is over, the tune lingers in the mind. Such is the magic
of Guru.
